October 4th

In this dream, arrows
are clattering
to the sidewalk
beneath the trees
the city planted, while
the shadows of old barns
set themselves next
to new houses.

The river’s name
is never the same twice,
and there are clocks
and pills and cars
and figure skaters
and lumberjacks
and Doug firs
and I
am always
apologizing
for being
this town’s first
drunk mayor.
