October 8th

Today, autumn
has exchanged pastoral warmth
for relentless color
and a broken ton
of curves that last
for miles. Theories
ring out from the branches
and mock the so-called luck
of the lake, while wind
from the North
bends the tin sign
of the bait store.

Now,
with the rains
beginning, Charity
finds herself stranded
on the wrong side
of the river, penniless
and irritated
by the gull
she had befriended
the day before.
