October 22nd

The busted luck
of a scarecrow stands
stark to the curse
in last year’s corn
and this year’s
volunteer pumpkins.
The edge of the silo
is a circle of red. Only
belief brings wheat
to its top.

Last night’s sky
summoned up
the luck of the blind
and today
the morning
is willing.
Between the pines
and the half-fallen barn,
the field begins filling
with birds.
