Best Places Northwest

by Sally Farhat (Editor)

This is the book that launched the best-selling Best Places regional guidebook series in 1975. Now in its 16th edition, Best Places Northwest has been substantially revised with fresh reviews and new content. From Oregon’s coastal gem Cannon Beach to enchanting Seattle to skiing center Whistler in British Columbia, the book offers candid reviews of where to stay, where to eat, and what to see along the way.

I designed and produced the interior of the Best Places Travel Series for Sasquatch Books. Sasquatch felt that the copy of the previous iterations of the Best Places books was too blocky and the names of the restaurants, hotels, and attractions did not stand out enough. He started by adding an indent to the description copy so that the heading and business name would be easily found. I also added a bit of space between paragraphs and moved the icons over to the right-hand side where they could be easily found, the left-hand side emphasizing the names and addresses with bold type. I kept the same font and streamlined the style sheets. The sidebars that had been in grey boxes in the previous books were now enclosed in a box with rounded corners. It felt more open and easier to read. The business names stood out but we still maintained a high word per page count. The cover was designed by Bob Suh. The style sheets were used on all the Best Places titles going forward.
